Description

“Dawn” is a quiet morning river with two white herons standing in the shallows. The whole picture rests on green and on the feeling of cool air before the heat of the day.

What the picture shows

The canvas is horizontal, and the water runs in a band across its full width, reflecting the trees. On the left, almost knee-deep, stand two pale herons with long necks and thin legs — the only light figures in all that green. A large spreading tree with a dense crown opens on the right, a birch trunk shows white beside it, and grass and ferns rise along the banks. A warm pink-orange gap of light stretches along the far shore, and that is what reads as dawn. The palette is deliberately restrained: only twelve bead colours, nearly all greens and ochres. The beads cover the crowns, the bankside greenery and the birds, while the water, the sky and the distance stay as print, so the stitched foliage looks dense and alive.
