“Summer garden” is a green arch of roses opening onto a lake and a flight of steps leading down to the water. The picture is about the moment you step out of deep shade into the light.

What the picture shows

The composition is vertical and built like a window: both edges of the canvas are closed off by dense foliage, and in the middle there is a bright opening with blue water, a far shore and a jetty. Roses are scattered over the green arch — dark red and crimson at the top, soft pink and cream on the right, small pink clusters on the left. Stone steps with a white balustrade run down from the opening. The palette rests on the contrast between deep emerald leaves and the warm shades of the petals. The beads cover the flowers, the leaves and the steps in dense areas, while the water, the sky and the distance stay as print on the canvas — which is what makes the opening feel genuinely deep and pushes the beaded greenery forward.
