Description

“Sunrise” is a decorative sun with a human face rising over the rooftops of a town. The subject is warm and fairy-tale-like, done in the spirit of old engravings, only in colour.

What the picture shows

A large round face of the sun sits at the centre of the canvas: pale, almost cream, with lined eyes, long lashes and a calm gaze. A ring of short red-orange rays runs around it like teeth, and beyond that long curved scrolls, rosettes and teardrop motifs fly outward in gold, terracotta, green and turquoise. Small butterflies rest on the sun's forehead and cheeks, and one larger butterfly sits in the top left. A rooster with a blue-green tail settles in the lower right, and the silhouettes of town roofs and chimneys darken along the bottom edge. The beads cover the rays, the ornament, the butterflies and the rooster; the light background between the motifs stays as print and gives the composition air.
