Description

“Triumph” shows a white horse rearing in the middle of a whirl of ornament. Horse and pattern are one thing here: the mane turns into scrolls, and the scrolls turn back into mane.

What the picture shows

The canvas is vertical and the movement runs on a diagonal — from the raised front legs at the lower left up to the thrown-back head at the top right. The horse's body is worked in silver-white, pearl and pale blue beads with warm ochre shadows, so the figure glows against the ground. The long mane and tail scatter into ivory, lilac and gold ribbons and lose themselves in the ornament. Everything around is filled with curved teardrop paisley motifs: violet, blue, terracotta and emerald, outlined with rows of tiny dots. The beads cover both the horse and the pattern, so the surface comes out textured all over, while a few darker areas stay as print and work as depth.
