Description

“Pomegranate tree” is a topiary in a terracotta pot, its crown packed solid with ripe pomegranates. The warm ochre palette and soft side light give the subject the feel of an old still life.

What the picture shows

The composition is vertical and tightly gathered: the round crown fills nearly two thirds of the canvas, held up by a thick twisted trunk that rises out of the clay pot. The pomegranates are painted by the dozen — from yellow-orange to deep red, each with its own highlight and dark little crown of a calyx. Small green leaves show between the fruit and give the crown depth. Two more fruits lie on the table beside the pot: one has split open to show its ruby seeds, the other is whole and still on a leafy twig. The beads cover the fruit, the leaves and the pot, while the smoky brown background and the tabletop stay as print — so the beadwork glows as though lit from within.
