Description

“Purple twilight” is a generous garden bouquet in a low woven basket, held together by a dusky palette: lilac, white, crimson and soft pink against a hazy grey-blue background.

What the picture shows

The bouquet spreads wide, almost the full width of the canvas, and lives on the play of warm against cool. Large white lilies with pointed petals glow on the right, crimson and red blooms flare in the centre, lilac and pink spikes reach up on the left, and small blue irises and a yellow bell hide between them. Long sword-shaped leaves and emerald stems cut across the bouquet at an angle and add movement. The beads cover the flowers and foliage only: the petals are filled in dense rows, so they carry a slight relief and catch the light differently. The wicker basket, the wooden tabletop and the misty background stay as print on the canvas, which is exactly why the beaded part looks raised and steps forward.
