Main Bead Embroidery Kit Rivers of love

“Rivers of love” shows a couple wrapped in gold and emerald ribbons, in the manner of Viennese Art Nouveau.

What the picture shows

The man and the woman are drawn as if drifting in a current: the bodies stretch on the diagonal, the arms are flung open, the eyes are closed. Everything except the faces and the bare arms is covered in ornament — ribbons of gold, emerald, blue and turquoise run across the canvas in broad waves. The most striking feature of this piece is the rosettes: hundreds of small circles laid in beads in a spiral, in different sizes and colours, from ochre to deep blue. It is these that give the surface its relief and make it shimmer in raking light. The background is a warm ochre mosaic of small rectangles and stays as print on the canvas. Twenty-one shades, most of them golden and blue. The beading here is denser than in an ordinary landscape: the ornament covers almost the entire surface, so the piece asks for patience, but the finished canvas comes close to a mosaic.
