“Concert” is a scene at home: a boy at the grand piano and two girls in long dresses listening to him.

What the picture shows

The scene unfolds in a spacious drawing room. On the left stands a black grand piano with a lit candelabrum, and a fair-haired boy in a white shirt sits at it. Beside him, leaning on the instrument, are two girls: one in a blue gown with a coral wrap, the other in pink with a flower in her hair. The folds of the dresses are worked in long rows of beads, so the fabric catches the light and reads as silk. Portraits in dark frames hang on the walls, a heavy blue curtain falls on the left, pink hydrangeas stand in vases, and a full lilac bush spreads on the right. Faces and floor stay as print on the canvas — the beadwork carries the dresses, the flowers and the piano, and those hold the whole composition. Nineteen shades are distributed across three large patches of colour — blue, pink and coral — and it is these that lead the eye from the piano across to the lilac in the right-hand corner.
