“Fragrant round dance” is a spring still life of tulips, irises and narcissi in blue-and-white porcelain.

What the picture shows

Several vessels are gathered on a pale table, each painted in its own way: a tall vase with a large blue floral pattern, a low bowl with a fine ornament, and a round vase in a blue lattice on the right. Pink and crimson tulips rise from the first on firm stems, yellow tulips lie in the bowl, deep blue irises and white narcissi with yellow centres stand behind, and small pink blossom bushes out on the right. A few cut flowers lie straight on the tabletop. The grey-lilac background is blurred and stays as print on the canvas, so the beaded flowers and porcelain step forward. Nineteen shades split into three groups: blue for the china, green for the stems and a warm floral range. The porcelain is stitched densely with white highlights on the sides of the vessels, so it reads as glossy next to the matte petals — the whole still life rests on that contrast of textures.
