What the picture shows

Another narrow vertical panel from the same series. The woman carries a large amphora painted in red and ochre on her shoulder; she wears a short banded top with a fine geometric pattern, layers of beads at her neck and wide bracelets on her arms. The long skirt is worked in black beads and divided into squares in which red flower rosettes alternate with African signs. On the right a red flower with long pointed leaves stands in a slim vase. The background is made of warm yellow and ochre planes with a large pale circle behind the figure, and it stays as print on the canvas. Fifteen colours sit mostly in the warm half of the spectrum, from sand to deep red. The rosettes on the skirt are laid in circles, so they stand out noticeably above the rest of the surface, while the smooth yellow background beside them stays as print and underlines that difference in texture.
