“Africa-2” is the silhouette of a woman against a red sunset over the savannah.

What the picture shows

This is the most graphic subject in the group: nine colours, crisp silhouettes and almost no half-tones. The woman stands half turned, one hand steadying a tall headwrap; wide ornaments at her neck and wrists are worked in white and silver beads that flare sharply against the black. Her dress is long and black with red insets down the side. Behind her a large yellow sun is setting, and the sky is ruled with bands of red, orange and cherry. Along the horizon three small figures walk with loads on their heads, and the silhouette of an acacia darkens beside them. The lower third of the canvas is treated as patterned red sand. Beads go onto the figure, the jewellery and the sun; the rest stays as print on the canvas. Nine colours make the smallest palette in this group, so the kit suits a first attempt at a large format: it is almost impossible to pick the wrong shade here.
