Description

“Sunrise song - 2” shows a large bird among flowering branches on a warm coral ground.

What the picture shows

The panel is as narrow and tall as the first part, but the subject is brought closer: the bird takes up almost the full width of the canvas. Its body is worked in pink, lilac and white beads with a pearl sheen, the neck curves upward, and long thin legs rest on a branch below. Branches with small white blossom are scattered at the right and along the top: every flower is laid from a few beads, while the dark twigs stay as print, which keeps the boughs light and transparent. The background is a wash of coral, peach and cream patches, left unstitched. Thirteen shades work towards shimmer rather than contrast, so the piece comes out pale and quiet. The stitching concentrates in the centre and along the right edge, while the lower corner stays almost bare — that open space is what creates the feeling of morning mist.
