“Sunrise song - 1” shows a white bird with its head raised against a large disc of sun, among flowering branches.

What the picture shows

This narrow vertical panel is built on light: a pale yellow sun rises in the lower third, and the bird stands directly in front of it, so its silhouette reads darker at the edges and brighter in the middle. The plumage is worked in white, pearl and pink beads, the long tail feathers fall in coral and lilac ribbons, and a fine crest sits on the head. White blossoms are scattered around on thin branches, each stitched from a few separate beads, which makes the boughs look dusted with flowers. The sky is painted in watercolour transitions of pink, peach and lilac and stays as print on the canvas. Eleven shades make a deliberately narrow palette: everything rests on pale shifts of tone rather than contrast. Beads go only onto the bird, the blossom and the disc of the sun; the rest of the canvas stays painted, so the piece stitches up faster than its height suggests.
