“Christmas celebration” is a panorama of a snowy town in the evening: the square is full of people, the windows are lit, and a large golden star has risen above the roofs.

What the picture shows

The format is strongly elongated, so the scene reads like a ribbon. On the left stretch small houses with snowy roofs and warm yellow windows; in the centre stand two-storey buildings with shops, garlands and signboards; on the right rise a tall fir tree hung with red and gold baubles and a brick house with a porch. Small dark figures walk and skate across the square, and a cart with a bright box stands at the bottom. The sky is deep blue with turquoise breaks, and the snow turns blue and violet in the shadows. The beads cover the windows, the garlands, the tree, the star and the snow, so the light is scattered along the whole length of the canvas. Fir trees on either side of the square are dusted with snow too and close the panorama at both ends.
