Main Bead Embroidery Kit Saxophonist
Description
“Saxophonist” shows a musician in profile with his instrument against a broad patch of golden light; the pose suggests the solo has only just begun.
What the picture shows
The figure is painted in almost unbroken strokes of blue, violet and emerald — jacket, trousers and the shadow on the face alike; his hair has flown loose and his head tips towards the instrument. The saxophone itself is stitched in warm gold and bronze beads, so it draws the eye immediately. The background splits in two: a wide yellow-ochre field, half sunlight and half spotlight, fills the right side and the top, while the left is darker, with violet, crimson and blue patches in which the outlines of city buildings can be made out. Below lies a stage or wet paving with red and green reflections. Beads cover nearly the whole canvas, so the finished piece is dense and saturated. The strokes are laid down abruptly, with the canvas showing through, which strengthens the sense of sound and rhythm.
