Description

“Tango style” catches a dancing couple at the very peak of the movement: he leads, she leans back, and both seem written into a whirl of colour.

What the picture shows

He wears a dark blue suit, she a dress of the same deep blue with a slit and golden shoes; her hair is pinned up, her back bare, her hand resting on his shoulder. The figures are stitched in short strokes, so the tension of the muscles and the swing of the fabric come through clearly. The background carries no detail at all — it is a fan of sweeping strokes in crimson, violet, orange, turquoise and ochre, spreading from the centre like the trace of the movement itself. The floor below is worked in warm gold and red bands. The contrast between the cool blue couple and the hot background is what holds the whole composition together. His face is turned towards the viewer, while hers is hidden by the turn of her head.
