Description

“Ellis” is a female figure on a winter street: a woman in a long red coat and a wide-brimmed red hat walks straight towards the viewer.

What the picture shows

The canvas is narrow and tall, so the figure takes up almost its full height. The coat is stitched in saturated red, cherry and terracotta beads with dark folds, the hat casts a shadow over the eyes, and long dark hair falls from under it. She carries a dark bag, wears black heeled boots, and the dress under the coat is charcoal grey. Snow lies all around, painted in white, blue and pearly strokes, with one more small figure just visible in the distance. The background and most of the snow stay as print on the canvas, while the beads cover the coat, hat, hair, boots and the patches of snow underfoot — which is exactly why the red silhouette stands out so sharply against the cold range.
