Description

“Turquoise” is a large dragonfly with open wings on a dense blue-turquoise ground made of circles, spirals and fine patterning.

What the picture shows

The dragonfly fills almost the whole square canvas: the long striped body runs diagonally, four wings spread out in every direction, and the head carries warm orange eyes — the only truly hot note in the piece. The wings are transparent only by convention: inside them lie wavy bands and scales of pale blue, white, green and ultramarine beads. The background is far from empty — decorative rosettes of rings and rays, half flower and half cogwheel, are scattered in the corners, with thin curls and broken lines between them. The range is cool, from near-black blue to mint and sea green. Beadwork covers most of the field, so the finished piece is dense and full of shine. In the upper left corner greenish-red reflections break up the otherwise solid blue.
