Description

“Good News” shows two decorative birds in flight among large ornamental flowers, in a composition close to folk painting.

What the picture shows

The upper bird is white with blue-violet wings patterned in scales and dots; the lower one is a deep emerald blue with a long peacock-like tail and carries a green sprig in its beak. Wings and tails are covered with fine patterning of circles, spirals and stripes in crimson, turquoise and red. Around them open big blooms with concentric centres — pink, blue, orange, white — and a band of small golden ornament lies in the lower left corner. The background is light, ochre and pearl, with a pale disc in it, and it stays as print on the canvas. The beads cover the birds, the flowers and the ornament, so the pattern stands out clearly above the matte ground. The colours are clean and saturated, almost without half-tones, as in traditional painting on wood.
