“Joyance of motherhood” shows a winged woman holding a child in her arms and bending her face, eyes closed, towards the baby.

What the picture shows

The wings open across the full width of the canvas and are stitched as long feathers in two ranges — a cool blue-and-white one and a warm golden ochre — so they frame the figures on both sides. The woman wears a tea-rose dress, has long dark hair and a wide silver bracelet on her wrist; the child presses his cheek to her shoulder, showing only a fair head and a small back. Behind them glows a large pale lilac circle, half moon and half halo. The colours are soft, with no harsh contrast: pearl white, ash blue, gold, flesh and warm pink. The faces and hands stay as print on the canvas, while the beads cover the wings, the hair, the dress and the bright circle behind. The feathers are laid in rows that follow the shape of the wing, so they look rounded and slightly wavy.
