Description

“Family prayer” is a vertical devotional piece: a prayer text at the centre, with twelve icons of the Mother of God gathered around it. The mood is restrained and solemn.

What the picture shows

The composition is built like a large frame of panels. At the centre a dark tablet carries the prayer in gold Church Slavonic lettering, with the heading set in larger letters. Around it — four above, four below and two on each side — sit small icons of the Mother of God, each in its own arched niche with a caption underneath. The space between the panels is filled with dense bead ornament: gold and cream beads, blue and red accents in the corners, and fine borders framing every icon. The faces and the prayer text stay as print on the canvas, while beadwork covers the ornament, the framing and the ground between the panels, which keeps the piece rich without becoming busy.
