Description

“Waterfall” is a mountain view whose whole story happens in the centre: a broad white torrent drops from a ledge and shatters on the rocks below.

What the picture shows

The composition is vertical and built in three planes. At the top there is a snowy rocky peak in haze and dark firs along the slopes. In the middle falls the waterfall itself, stitched in pale, almost translucent beads that visibly catch the light against the matte canvas and carry the movement of the water. Below lies a lake of deep blue and turquoise with small waves and boulders near the shore. The foreground is the warmest part: yellow, red and burgundy flowers and shrubs frame the water on both sides and balance the cool centre. The distant mountains and the sky stay as print, while the beads cover the falling water, the lake, the stones and the blossoms — exactly the areas that carry all the light.
