“Seaside street” is a quiet cobbled lane in a southern town, where the stone houses are buried in greenery and the sun is only just reaching the walls.

What the picture shows

The lane runs into the distance: on the left there is an old stone house with an arched doorway, a clay jug by the threshold and pink flowers spilling down the wall. On the right rises a pale house with a round tower, a small balcony and a tiled roof, wrapped in roses and bougainvillea. Between them stand ivy-covered stone pillars, slim cypresses and a distant white gate opening onto bright sky. The paving of pink-grey slabs takes up almost a third of the canvas. The colours are warm — terracotta, ochre, many shades of green, with touches of crimson and lilac. Beads cover the foliage, blossoms, masonry and the stones of the path, while the sky and the far view stay as print, so the depth of the street is preserved. The sky is clear, with a few white clouds above the tips of the cypresses, and it adds air to the whole scene.
