Description

“Cheerful umbrellas” turns a city downpour into a celebration of colour: blue, orange, crimson and emerald canopies drift above the wet pavement, and the people beneath them stay as almost faceless silhouettes.

What the picture shows

The canvas is narrow and tall, so the umbrellas are stacked in tiers: blue and orange ones crowd the top, a large crimson canopy and a striped green-and-yellow one hold the middle, and a white umbrella above a figure in a long pale coat leads the eye down. The rain is drawn as long light streaks running the full height of the picture. The bottom third belongs to puddles, where rings spread from falling drops — this is where the beads do their best work, because clear and pearl beads read as water. The yellow-green and lilac background stays as print, while the beadwork covers the umbrellas, the figures and the shine of the pavement.
