Main Bead Embroidery Kit May's embrace

“May's embrace” is a generous spring bouquet in a glass vase, gathered from tulips, poppies, lilac and white blooms. The work is light and fresh, with a blue background and a scatter of flowers below.

What the picture shows

The bouquet fills nearly the whole picture and spreads in every direction, as if it had only just been put in water. It holds orange and red tulips, a deep red poppy with a black centre, small white and cream florets, lilac and pink clusters, yellow heads and long green leaves sticking out on all sides. The glass vase is transparent, with broad pale highlights, and the stems show through it. The background above is calm, blue with white, and below, in front of the vase, lies a pale table strewn with tiny white and yellow flowers. The beads cover all the flowers, the leaves, the vase and the blooms on the table, while the sky-blue background stays as print on the canvas — and it is against it that the bouquet looks fullest.
