Description

“Three virtues” shows three large lilies against a background of coloured whirls built from waves and curls. The work is bright and decorative, with almost no quiet areas.

What the picture shows

The flowers are placed on a diagonal: at the top right a red-orange lily with wide open petals and long stamens, in the middle left the largest one, white and pink with crimson stripes running down each petal, and at the bottom right a golden-orange bloom seen almost in profile. All around them the background twists into spirals and waves: emerald, blue, lilac, ochre and terracotta flow into one another, with small curled rings surfacing here and there. The beads cover the lily petals, their stamens, the green stems and the main lines of the whirls; part of the background stays as print on the canvas, so the stitched bands read as raised relief over a painted base.
