“Afloat house” is a silvery-grey landscape set in a shaped medallion: a house right by the water, its reflection in the lake and a blossoming tree beside it. The scene is almost monochrome, and only the flowers and the greenery glow with colour.

What the picture shows

At the centre, framed by ornate scrollwork, lies a quiet lake and an old house with a tall roof half hidden among the trees. On the right a pink tree is in bloom, with a blossom-covered arch leading towards it; on the left the branches lean down to the water. Water lilies and a white bird sit on the surface, and the background beyond the medallion is pale grey with a faint floral pattern. The corners of the composition are held by large white flowers with yellow centres and by lilac blossom clusters. The beads cover the scrolled frame, the greenery, the flowers, the roof and walls of the house and the reflections on the water; the far shore, the mist and the patterned background stay as print on the canvas, so the picture looks like an old photograph in which only the coloured patches have come alive.
