“Autumn scenes-1” is a narrow vertical study from the height of golden autumn: a spreading tree with a deep red crown above a green slope, and a pale stream near the very bottom. The mood is calm and evening-like, without any drama.

What the picture shows

The composition is stretched upwards, so the tree fills almost two thirds of the picture: its crown is built from small red, crimson and orange dabs with the sky showing through here and there. Behind it the evening sky glows warm ochre and pink with lilac clouds, while on the left the depth is lost in a grey haze. Below there is dense greenery — grass, tall stems and fern, scattered with tiny pale flowers. The lowest part is water: a bright band of stream with white and pearl highlights. The beads go exactly where the picture should glow — the leaves of the crown, the grassy slope, the flowers and the reflections on the water — while the sky and the distant mist stay as print on the canvas and hold the depth.
