Main Bead Embroidery Kit Love story – 1

“Love story – 1” shows a couple under a large blue umbrella walking through autumn rain. We see them from behind; the man in a dark blue coat holds his companion close, and the two almost merge into a single silhouette. The painting is done in broad strokes, in the manner of palette-knife work.

What the picture shows

The range is cool — blue, ultramarine and steel grey in the figures and the pavement — with contrast supplied by the rust and orange patches of autumn leaves on either side. The wet asphalt below reflects the figures in long pale streaks. Beads cover the umbrella, the coat, the figures and the brightest reflections on the paving, and it is the abrupt change of tone between neighbouring beads that conveys the texture of thick impasto. The blurred background of trees stays as print on the artist canvas. The wet paving takes up almost a third of the canvas below and works as a mirror for the whole scene. The umbrella cuts across the top edge and closes the composition, leaving the couple in a small sheltered space.

The piece is vertical and small, so it easily finds a place in a bedroom, a hallway or above a desk. It is the first of three rainy subjects that look particularly good hung together on one wall. Gallery finishing is possible — the canvas stretches over a bar and hangs as it is.
