Main Bead Embroidery Kit Magic

“Magic” is a fantasy tree on a narrow vertical canvas. The trunk twists into spirals and runs down into roots that look like tongues of flame, while small white, yellow and pink flowers are scattered through blue-green foliage in the crown. The piece is decorative, close to a fairy tale.

What the picture shows

The colour is built on the contrast of warm and cool: an orange-copper trunk and roots against deep blue, turquoise and emerald leaves. Pale flower dots are strewn across the crown and work like stars in a night sky. Beads cover the trunk, the spiralling curls of the roots, individual blossoms and the brightest areas of the crown; the overall ground of blurred green and blue stays as print on the artist canvas, which keeps the panel from becoming too heavy. A face can be made out in the curls of the trunk, so the tree reads at once as a plant and as a figure.

The format is unusually narrow and tall — 210 mm wide by 650 mm high — so the piece is made for a pier wall, a narrow strip beside a door, or a vertical group of two or three panels. The colours are bright and hold up well on a plain light wall. Gallery finishing is possible — the canvas stretches over a bar with no frame or mount.
