“Home Sweet Home” shows an old cottage with a steep tiled roof and a brick chimney, sunk in a flowering garden. A dog lies by the door with its turquoise shutters, a low white picket fence runs around, and roses and delphiniums bloom along the path in an unbroken carpet.

What the picture shows

The composition is square and very dense: flowers take up almost half the surface and rise from the bottom edge to the blossoming tree that hangs in from the right. The colours are bright and mixed — red, crimson, white, blue and yellow in the beds, a warm ochre roof, lush green throughout. Beads cover the roof, the walls, the windows, the fence and every patch of flowers, which is what makes the garden look three-dimensional and lit; the distant trees, the sky and the soft greenery behind the house stay as print on the artist canvas. A branch of pink blossom hangs in from the top right, closing the composition and echoing the colour of the beds below.
