“Sweet life” is a view through an old stone arch: a pot of abundant pink flowers stands on a wide sill, and beyond it an old town of towers and tiled roofs opens in soft haze. Pearl strands and a piece of lace lie on the stone, as though someone had just stepped out of the room.

What the picture shows

The palette is light and warm — a cream and ochre arch, pastel blue sky, and at the centre pink, coral and lilac blossoms above dark green leaves. The flowers and foliage are densely beaded and therefore carry the eye; single beads also form the strands of pearls hanging from the sill and the lettering cut into the stone. The panorama of the town, the roofs and the distant towers stay as print on the artist canvas, which keeps the depth intact and stops the picture from becoming busy. The arch frames the subject on three sides and works as a natural mount inside the picture itself.
