“Evening embankment” shows a woman in a long red backless dress standing at a stone balustrade and looking out over Venice at dusk. Behind her rise a cathedral dome, gondolas on the water and a gondolier pushing off with his oar. The subject is romantic and restrained: we never see her face, only her silhouette.

What the picture shows

The whole piece rests on contrast — a deep red dress with a long train against a warm golden-peach sunset and the ash-grey water of the canal. The dress is beaded in several shades of red, from an almost black cherry in the folds to a pale, nearly pink tone where the light falls, which gives the fabric real volume. Beads also fill the balustrade, the swept-up hair and the stiletto heel. The city behind stays as print on the artist canvas, soft and slightly blurred, as if seen through haze. The pale posts of the balustrade divide the lower part into even verticals and underline the elongated format.

The format is narrow and tall, close to twice as high as it is wide, so it fills a pier between windows, the wall beside a mirror or a narrow stretch of hallway.
