“Mountain morning” shows a mountain lake, a house among the pines on its shore, and distant rocky peaks in the morning haze. The landscape is spacious and calm.

What the picture shows

On the gently sloping left bank stands a house with pale walls and a blue roof, almost hidden behind tall pines and white-barked birches. A sandy path leads to it, edged with pink, white and blue flowers, and large boulders lie down by the water. The lake fills the whole centre of the composition: the water is beaded in blue, sky and white with horizontal highlights, and a bleached log floats in it. Beyond the lake rise greyish-lilac cliffs with a dark band of conifers between them. On the right are a high stone slope and a shrub with red berries in the foreground. Beads cover the water, the trees, the flowers and the stones of the shore, while the far mountains and the sky stay as print on the canvas, so the depth reads naturally.
