“Hydrangea at window” shows a generous pink and crimson hydrangea in an orange pot on a blue window sill. It is a small, light still life with a beaded border round the edge.

What the picture shows

The hydrangea heads are built from a mass of tiny florets — deep crimson and coral through to pale pink, cream and greenish white — so the ball of the bouquet shimmers with several shades at once. The pot is rounded and terracotta orange, worked in horizontal bands of beads that suggest the clay. A few heads hang over the rim of the pot and almost touch the sill. To the left, greenery outside shows through a white window with a wooden frame; the sill and the cabinet below it are beaded in blue and pale blue with dark shadows under the counter. A green leaf and a few small berries lie on the sill. The border is laid out in triangles of blue, sky, green and white. The view behind the window stays as print on the canvas.
