“Smart frost” shows an armful of delicate cream and peach flowers in a metal pail on a terracotta counter. It is a calm still life in soft daylight.

What the picture shows

The bouquet is loose and natural: dozens of small blooms with yellow centres and narrow petals, with long slender leaves hanging over the edges between them. The pail is beaded in grey and steel tones with hoops running round it, so the metal reads as slightly worn and matte. The counter beneath is a rusty terracotta with horizontal strokes of light, and two white shells lie beside the pail. The background is split in two: a greenish wall with birch trunks on the left, a warm patch of yellow light on the right. The border around the edge is beaded in diamonds of green, yellow, orange and white. Beads densely cover the flowers, the foliage, the pail and the border, while the background and the counter stay largely as print on the canvas.
