“Sunny Windly” shows the face of the sun with long fiery hair streaming among sunflowers. The subject is decorative and warm, built on a range of orange and gold.

What the picture shows

At the centre is a large pale face with calm blue eyes and a golden mark on the forehead. The ray-like hair is beaded in red, orange and copper, laid in waves and curls that flow around the face on every side. Stylised sunflowers are scattered all around, their centres filled with concentric rings of tiny beads and their petals in orange and ochre. The composition is symmetrical, with the face set exactly in the middle of the canvas. Carved green leaves on slender stems appear to the left and right, and towards the bottom the background shifts into soft blue-green tones, like a sky at dawn. Beads cover the hair, the flowers, the leaves and the decorative circles, while the face of the sun stays as print on the canvas — which keeps it painterly and soft amid the dense, glittering stitching.
