“Girl on ball” shows a small circus performer balancing on a lilac ball, arms spread wide and eyes closed. The subject is light and touching, with an unmistakable big-top mood.

What the picture shows

The girl wears a black-and-white striped top and a full red petal skirt, with a pointed green cap on her head and fair hair tied into two ponytails with red ribbons. She stands barefoot on the ball, beaded in lilac and blue, holding her balance with the faintest smile. The whole composition rests on the diagonal of the outstretched arms and the slight tilt of the body. The background is warm ochre-yellow, with a wide pale oval of the ring beneath her feet. Across the top, taut ropes and garlands beaded in white and dark brown read immediately as the vault of a circus tent. The beadwork goes into the costume, the ball, the ropes and the outline of the ring, while the face, the arms and the soft light of the background stay as print on the canvas.
