Description

“First star” shows two little angels who have climbed a wooden ladder high into the winter sky to light the candle in a lantern. The subject is quiet, festive and slightly fairy-tale.

What the picture shows

The upper angel in a white shirt reaches up towards the small flame, lit from behind by a wide luminous circle — the moon, or the first star of the evening. The younger one, in a green scarf and a red hat, stands on the rung below and looks down. Both have white feathery wings. The ladder crosses with wooden poles and is dusted with snow; large snowflakes fall all around against a deep blue sky streaked with white. At the bottom, right in the snowdrift, stand two wrapped presents tied with ribbon. Beads cover the clothes, the wings, the ladder, the snowflakes and the gifts, while the night sky and the glow stay as print on the canvas.
