“Dance of the Little Swans” shows four plump little angel girls in full tutus dancing in a row, holding on to one another. The subject smiles: each has her own movement and her own expression.

What the picture shows

The tutus come in different colours — sky blue, raspberry, purple and golden orange — and these are the most densely beaded areas, so the skirts turn out rounded and iridescent. Each girl has small translucent wings behind her shoulders, and hair tied into ponytails and braids that fly out with the movement. The background is a soft creamy yellow glow with no detail, and the floor below is white and blue, like thin ice or a stage under frosty streaks. The faces, arms and legs stay as print on the canvas, so the skin keeps its painterly softness while the beadwork goes into the costumes and the floor. The elongated horizontal format lines the figures up as frames of a single dance.
