Description

“Salon buffet” shows three rose trees standing in front of bookshelves packed with old volumes. It is a picture about a home library where living flowers and books share the same shelf.

What the picture shows

The shelves are tightly lined with book spines in many shades, along with a porcelain elephant and a round clock. In front of them grow three trees bearing red roses and white blossom: one in a woven beige planter, one in a green ceramic pot, and one in a tall pale vase with a beaded pattern. On the counter below lies a small framed picture with a few cut roses scattered beside it. The whole range is warm and ochre, with turquoise inserts in the carved ornament on the side panels and the plinth. Beads densely cover the leaves, the roses, the pots, the ornament and the wooden frame, while the book spines and the back wall stay as print on the canvas and give the scene its depth.
