Description

“Mosaic elephant” shows an elephant assembled from coloured mosaic shards against blue water and a setting sun.

What the picture shows

The animal walks from left to right with its trunk raised. Its body is built from small segments — emerald, turquoise, orange, red and ochre pieces separated by dark outlines. On the right, a large sun hangs above the horizon with a white core and a golden halo, throwing a bright path across the water. The blue background is drawn over with fine gold lines that curve like reed stems and close into wide loops. Beadwork covers the elephant, the sun, the gold lines and the reflections on the water, while the blue background mostly stays as print, so the mosaic on the animal comes out brighter still. The tusk and the underside of the trunk are pale, almost white, so the head draws the eye at once. Below the elephant the water is laid in horizontal strokes of blue and turquoise, and above, a few gold lines cross the sky like a web.
