“Old town” is a fairy-tale street in an old city at sunset, with fanciful houses whose roofs nearly meet overhead.

What the picture shows

The frame is built as a narrow gap between two dark façades at the edges, and the depth of the street opens through it. On the right rises a many-coloured house with a red spire, a round rose window and tall arched windows outlined in pale beads. On the left is a pink-lilac façade with an arcade and a balcony. Further back, in violet haze, stands the silhouette of a Gothic cathedral with pointed towers, and a small street lamp shows below. The sky above the city shifts from lilac to gold and orange. Beadwork covers the façades, the windows, the roofs and the lamp, while the sky and the misty spires stay as print, which keeps the feeling of warm evening air. The windows are worked in rows of pale beads, so it looks as though the lamps inside are already lit. The street below sinks into shadow, while the brightest part of the sky falls exactly at the centre of the frame, between the roofs.
