Description

“Vintage – 1” is a symmetrical decorative medallion on a terracotta ground, built from only three bead colours. It is a calm piece and an easy way into the technique.

What the picture shows

At the centre of the square sits a flower of large bronze beads with a dark middle and four pointed petals. Concentric shaped frames surround it: first a white line of small beads, then gold, then another white wavy line with teardrop insets. Mirrored scrolls fill the corners, and a fine gold outer frame runs around the whole field. The background is a muted terracotta burgundy with the faint texture of the canvas showing through. Only the ornament is beaded; the background stays as print, so the pattern reads like an openwork metal plate laid over fabric. Every line of the ornament is worked in a single row of beads, which is what makes the drawing so crisp and graphic. Single white beads are scattered across the inner field as small points of light.
