“Africa daughter” is the profile of a young woman with closed eyes, surrounded by a swirl of warm curls. It is a calm, inward-looking piece.

What the picture shows

The face is shown from the side, lashes lowered, a faint smile on the lips. She wears a black cap embroidered with large coloured cabochon beads — amber, pale blue, white — and a small gold earring. Her shoulder is covered by white openwork fabric worked as a beaded mesh. The whole background is movement: copper, gold, blue and turquoise spirals radiating from the head, patches of leopard skin, fine gold netting. Beadwork covers the cap, the jewellery, the lace and the brightest curls, while the face and part of the background stay as print, so the stitching accents the portrait instead of overloading it. The cabochons on the cap are the largest elements in the piece: they stand noticeably proud of the canvas and catch the light. To the right of the head the background turns into a gold net pattern, like sunlight through leaves.
