“The Earth” is a close-up of the globe against a starry sky. The idea is simple and the effect is strong.

What the picture shows

The planet fills almost the whole square: blue and deep navy oceans, green and ochre-brown continents, white glints of cloud and ice towards the edges. The light of a distant star breaks past the globe at the upper right, a small blue moon hangs on the left, and the space around is filled with a violet-blue nebula scattered with tiny stars. The globe itself is beaded densely, so it stands proud of the surface and catches light from different angles, while the cosmic background stays as print on the canvas, punctuated only by individual beaded stars. The colour range is enough to show both the depth of the oceans and the relief of the land. The outlines of the continents are irregular and inventive, with long bays and small islands, and the ocean darkens almost to black towards the rim of the globe. Small stars are scattered unevenly across the background, thickening towards the top.
