“Autumn embankment” is a riverside walk in a large city after rain, where the whole panorama is treated almost graphically and a single autumn tree burns with colour.

What the picture shows

On the left, an old tree rises the full height of the picture, its spreading branches carrying orange and red foliage — the main and almost the only colour in the piece. Everything else is built on grey and white: beyond the parapet a clock tower and the outline of a parliament building show through the haze, a long balustrade runs along the river and cast-iron lamps recede into the distance. The nearest lamp glows with a warm light. A couple under an umbrella walks away across the wet paving. Beadwork covers the leaves, the trunk, the lamps, the railing and the shine on the stones, while the misty panorama stays as print, so it keeps looking light and far away. The branches are drawn out to the finest twigs, with single red leaves still holding on. On the right a lamp post rises almost the full height of the picture, its heavy patterned base standing straight on the paving.
