“Tweeters” shows two budgerigars perched on the handset of an antique telephone, beaks touching. It is a light, warm subject with a good dose of humour.

What the picture shows

The birds sit side by side: a bright yellow one with black speckles on its wings on the left, a lime green one on the right. Below them is a telephone with a bronze body, a carved base and a pale dial, its black cord curling down off the table. The table is covered with a white cloth, and red cherries on a sprig and small apples lie beside it. The background is pale olive with a faint damask-style leaf pattern. Beadwork covers the budgies, the telephone, the cherries and the cord, while the patterned background and the tablecloth stay as print on the canvas, so the main details come out rounded and stand slightly proud of the surface. The pale dial and the small fittings are picked out bead by bead, so the telephone looks like a genuine antique. The budgies’ plumage is worked in soft gradations from lemon to grass green.
