“Icon of the Mother of God «Refreshing and Refuge»” shows the Virgin with the Child, her hand raised towards her lips. The range is warm: red, gold and green.

What the picture shows

The Virgin is shown half length in a deep red maphorion with a gold edge, blue robes and a green head cloth visible beneath. Her right hand is raised to her face — the gesture that identifies this particular image. Christ sits on her left arm in green robes over a pale shirt, his face turned to the viewer. Both halos are gold, and the background is golden ochre with a fine pattern. The wide border is worked in red beads with a plant ornament and pale flowers at the corners, with a lettered band at the bottom. Eighteen colours give depth to the folds of cloth and gradation to the gold. Robes, halos, background and border are beaded, while the faces and hands stay as print on the canvas.
