“Madonna lilies” is a bouquet of white lilies in a glass vase by a window, kept in a cool blue-and-white key. The mood is light and airy, with the feel of morning light through a sheer curtain.

What the picture shows

The flowers are wide open, with long curled petals and prominent stamens, and several closed green buds beside them. The vase is clear and rounded, with the stems and water visible through the glass; one bloom lies apart on the table. A white curtain falls on the right, and a small butterfly has settled on it — a warm accent against the cool tones. The whole scene is built on gradations of white, blue and grey-blue, with only the flower centres giving ochre and reddish notes. Beads cover the petals, leaves, vase and butterfly, while the drapery of the curtain and the background stay as print on the canvas, so the flowers step forward and read as almost three-dimensional. Fifteen colours give smooth transitions inside every petal.
